If the Colorado Springs Police were able to arrive at the scene in 2- 3 minutes after the first 911 call, can someone explain to me why "Pro-Life" New Life Church needs armed security guards?

Given that I was in DC when this happened I found it humorous that the national news was giving context to the New Life Church by reminding viewers that it is the 'Ted Haggard' church and giving the history of last year's scandal.
I can hardly fault them when, in hindsight, it appears that one of those guards took down the crazed gunman.
Almost any Denver venue with that many people together at once would require you to hire security guards in any case. I suspect that the usual drill has more to do with directing traffic for 7,000 people trying to make it to Sunday dinner in their cars after the service, but sometimes shit happens.
on further hindsight, it appears that the gunman died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. so much for all the sound bites that woman got about "an assignment from god".
I can see an orange vest to direct traffic but I don't see a gun as necessary for parking lot management.
